Now that I am no longer confused about Star Trek, I felt that I should actually talk about it. I do not believe that Star Trek really pushed down women, the more I thought about it. The argument I had in an earlier blog post, I stated that women were always the weak link, basically. Although, I do not believe that that is true. Sorry to contradict myself, but here is my reasoning. In the movie, every character had their own flaws. Data was in-able to control anything about himself, always having to take orders. Even then, HE as a male was abducted, not a female. Then you notice the men when they were trying to stop the droids in space, THEY were the ones to die. In addition, I do not believe the women were 'sexualized' as we had briefly talked about in class. In fact, they fit their roles as a person. Nowhere in that movie were they talking about how hot the character was, nor was there any foul play. The Queen was said to portray that she was sexy, not really. What is sexy about a slimy half women? I think that she was played to be ugly. Although, my taste might be different then yours, HA!!
But, to stick with my first post, I do believe that women were always the backup. That is clearly evident, as I wrote before.
Do you really think that women were down played or sexualized?!
P.S. I liked the ending of The Diamond Age, it was pretty unique.

Star Trek
I would like to first say that I HATE Star Trek!! So Data, what is his role? I know that he saved the captain and then the captain went back to save him. I also know that the Borg's were trying to convert him to be like them? Right? I don't understand the point of him having partial skin of theirs on him and not his whole body... Really though, that whole situation confused me. Data began to have human feelings, how? The skin? What was her benefit of him having human feelings?
Also, the Borg's are extremely stupid. LEARN HOW TO FIGHT!! If they are able to adapt, they should be able to learn how to fight.
In addition to my little rant of confusion and anger, I noticed that the girls are never the fighters. They are always the backup. For example, when they were back on Earth. She didn't go in the space ship with the boys, she was left back. Why?! Then there was a part where she was drunk, left vulnerable. Also, Lily, whom seems really smart was never really in the battle. In the beginning she was the one hurt. Then she was the girl running away always screaming, etc. I could keep going on.
All the men seem to be extremely strong and in charge, the girls are always vulnerable.

Technology
In class, we talked about technology, which was very interesting. I wanted to write this blog about some of the topics that we had discussed.
One of them being, what would our ancestors think if they saw how we lived today? Well, what I think is that they would be pretty proud of how we are turning out. The reason I think this is because they had inventions back then too. Want to know the connection? Here it is, without inventions, we won't have inventions. Back in the day, they had an old phone that was probably the size of our computer now. As it evolves, it becomes more useful. Thus, what I believe is what they wanted.
I also think that we will never become reliable on technology. Technology makes life easier but no reliable. For example, I can't rely on my macbook to not die while I type this, poor example but I hope you understand.
In addition, I think that we will ALWAYS have a balance. Like I said in class, as much as I want to be GO TECHNOLOGY and YAY CELL PHONE some others may think different. "What about the animals? The wilderness? The OZONE!!!". With this balance, we will never be overpowered. We will always have the heads up on everything.
Side note, without technology there will be no way of living as long as we do now.
I personally will never say technology is a bad thing, nor will I ever go against it.
What do you think? Do you think technology will soon take over the world? Or will we always be ahead?
- I thought this video was a little funny....

Deerskin
The first thing I wanted to say is that I actually do really enjoy this book, although I think that it comes with a lot of thinking. Whether it was with her use of colors, descriptions or even trying to figure out what was really going on.
The use of colors, I thought, was very well done. Especially when it came to the white being pure, green being nature, etc. Those were just a few examples of how color had made an appearance during the book. Do you think that the colors were necessary? I do, I think this way the reader themselves could come up with their own conclusions and how they see the book being written. It can't be either black or white- like my color use? Haha.
With the descriptions, I thought it was a bit hard to understand and could have been written a lot clearer. Do you happen to know who the direct audience was? Because sometimes it was hard for myself to even understand what was going on. I know some of you had that same issue when it came to the baby or even the rape scene itself. That's really the only thing I have an issue with in the book.
I also like how she interpreted Donkeyskin and I'm excited to see what happens to her father =]

Class on Oct. 21
During class on Thursday, I thought that we talked about many interesting topics. I love how we always go off on our little tangents =]
The first thing I wanted to talk about was how little kid stories change throughout time. We discussed how Disney changed the story of Cinderella to being PG. Do you think that they should have? Obviously if they didn't, Disney could not produce it. I think that they should not have. Make up their own story, not copy someone else and change the story.
Although, I do find it quite interesting how really nice and inspirational stories were actually very brutal. Makes me wonder how other stories were twisted from the actual written literature. Bottom line, Cinderella is OBVIOUSLY not a kid story, haha.

In addition, I wanted to talk a little bit about Deerskin. I actually like how the book is written and how it is another easy read. I do think that Asher, her dog, is very symbolic and I wanted to see how it will be developed later in her book.
The only thing I did not like was the rape scene. I know we talked about how it was necessary to have it within the text, but, I do think he could have been brought out in a different way. That's just my personal opinion. I don't really want to get into a conversation about it, it's really not that big of a deal to me. I just thought I could through that in.

Psychoanalytical Criticism
I just wanted to rant about psychoanalytical criticism, I think it is 'crap'. While I was listening to the literature group today I do believe they did a good job. Although, I personally believe that all of it was just a reason. I think that psychoanalytical just gave critical thinkers more of a reason to 'think', haha.
In class today, we discussed what women want and how you could never pin point what it was. This is true and I'll use my example like I used in class; when I was younger I wanted a barbie doll, now I want a better car and in the future I might want more money. Everything depends on the time period, how old the person is, how they were brought up-values and so many more things.
In addition, we discussed this in reference to the book. As many times as we try to interpret what the author meant by this, or what she meant by this word use, we can't. Simply because of what is listed above or who the directed audiences is. When I use analogies, comparisons, etc, I try to use the appropriate for my audience. For example, the wind was as windy as the world spinning around the world. I know, it doesn't make sense but that was directed towards an adult audience because they are more likely to understand or narrow it down. Where if I was to talk to a child I would say, the wind was as windy as a fan blowing in my face.
With this book, there could be reasoning behind her writing what she did, mainly her audience. Or, maybe it was because she wanted to address issues that as some point your going to have to go through, like identity. There are so soo sooo many reasons why they wrote what they did and to try to analyze it is crap cause you can't. No one can except for themselves.
I guess I just felt the need to go on a mini rant and I felt this would be a good place to do it. I'm sure that I am not the only one to think so but please tell me otherwise if you don't.
To add on to everything that I had written above, I would like to say that I really enjoyed the book!! It was a very interesting story and easily read. It kept me interested and wanted me to read more.

Bloodchild
For my first blog, I will be discussing the beginning of the short story and exploring flaws that lead to unanswered questions. Within the first few paragraphs, we are introduced to the family and T'Gatoi. T'Gatoi and Lien had a very interesting relationship, that I am trying to understand further.
In the first few pages, Butler discussed their relationship as long existing but hostile towards one another. Lien would not take any of the eggs and seemed distant with T'Gatoi being present in their home. Is it quite possibly because she wanted to live a normal life? Do you think that after living in the reserve and seeing her family 'get high' off the eggs, she would have the strength to say no? Why? She obviously did but I want to explore the idea of why. I personally think it is because she knows and wants a normal life. As we do not see that from the story, she seems to not be welcoming to anything that T'Gatoi has to offer.
Although, they were raised together and had a pre-existing relationship as best friends. Which could introduce the question into how long they have had the reserve. In my thought, I do not think for a long period of time. If it were years, I would assume that there would be almost no opposing thoughts. The residents would be raised with this lifestyle not knowing any other way, thus, not being able to reject.
I wish that we had a better understanding of the background of the story. I am aware that the point of this story to be a short story. I personally think that with just a few introduction paragraphs explaining the history, we would not have to raise questions into what happened. We would know the who, what, where, when, why and how. No questions would be left unanswered.
