Blog Post 7

Now that I am no longer confused about Star Trek, I felt that I should actually talk about it. I do not believe that Star Trek really pushed down women, the more I thought about it. The argument I had in an earlier blog post, I stated that women were always the weak link, basically. Although, I do not believe that that is true. Sorry to contradict myself, but here is my reasoning. In the movie, every character had their own flaws. Data was in-able to control anything about himself, always having to take orders. Even then, HE as a male was abducted, not a female. Then you notice the men when they were trying to stop the droids in space, THEY were the ones to die. In addition, I do not believe the women were 'sexualized' as we had briefly talked about in class. In fact, they fit their roles as a person. Nowhere in that movie were they talking about how hot the character was, nor was there any foul play. The Queen was said to portray that she was sexy, not really. What is sexy about a slimy half women? I think that she was played to be ugly. Although, my taste might be different then yours, HA!!
But, to stick with my first post, I do believe that women were always the backup. That is clearly evident, as I wrote before.
Do you really think that women were down played or sexualized?!
P.S. I liked the ending of The Diamond Age, it was pretty unique.

  1. It's been a few days since I watched the film and I have finals on the brain so it's hard to think of anything else but I do feel that the Borg Queen was very sexual. She used the power of sex to have Data join her side. Not only that but she used alot of sexual inuendo and seductive even though she was slimy. Also all the women in the film played the nuturing roles, being doctors and therapists, while the men all had ranking positions. I do agree that they did have some part that made men the weak like, like Data sort of being the damsle in destress but there were still parts that made women seem like just sexual, nuturing beigns. I also enjoyed the end of Diamond Age more since we discussed it in class. Made more sense why Stephenson chose to end the book that way.

  2. So The queen totally freaked me out!! I am not really sure what to say about her little tricks to win over and control Data. Data on the other hand I saw as a weak link in the area of protecting and some problem solving skills. The reason I felt this way is because he is a droid, a machine, how in the hell could he get captured? I wonder if the writters had Data be more imperfect to show that he is becoming more human and makes poor judgements because of it. I do love the fact that Data is so loyal to the crew!! What he lacks in problem solving he gains in dedication and loyalty!! I enjoyed the movie overall there were really a lot of areas in the movie that had a strong hidden meaning for example I do not think the normal average person would see the huge role of behind the scenes of a brilliant man is an outstanding women unless you were looking for it. Because we had the speaker it made it very apparent what was happening but I don't know that I would have picked up on it just from watching the movie. This class has opened my eyes to look for themes that are hidden in literature and cinema. I love that!!!
